HTC U11 running 7.1.1. Most of the method is very similar to a HTC marshmallow based phone.
At times this is very needed, esp around updates etc. Esp when you’ve done a factory reset and you still have problems. Seems to be esp useful around battery problems.
A little warning, don’t do this too much and too often as it can possibly mess up the phone more that way. Once in a while is ok.
So, what is a ‘cache partition’?
Temporary storage of system data. It allows the system to access apps more quickly and effectively. Sometimes needs to be cleaned due to being outdated and cluttered. Which in turns makes the system to run more smoothly.

This starts with your phone turned OFF. Get into what’s now HTC download mode by pressing power button + volume down at the same time.
Select “reboot to bootloader“. Press power button to confirm.
Cycle through the options with the volume buttons, confirm with power button when you see “Reboot to recovery“.
When you see the phone with an exclamation mark in it. Press power button and keep it pressed, and tap volume up button shortly. Release power button when you see the screen below.
Select “Wipe cache partition” with volume buttons and confirm with power button. Let it do it’s thing. Select “Reboot system now” to reboot. Confirm with power button.
